Railway Recruitment Boards (RRBs) have released Centralised Employment Notification (CEN) No. 09/2025 for 21,997+ vacancies in various Level-1 posts (Group D equivalent) across Indian Railways. The selection process is multi-stage and strictly merit-based. Below is a clear, detailed explanation of the entire selection process, CBT exam pattern, syllabus, qualifying marks, Physical Efficiency Test (PET), and more – based on the official notification.
1. Selection Process – Mandatory Stages
The recruitment process consists of the following compulsory stages:
- Computer Based Test (CBT)
- This is the primary screening stage.
- It is a single-stage objective test, but the Railway Administration reserves the right to conduct it in single or multi-stage mode if required.
- Only candidates who qualify in CBT will proceed to the next stage.
- Physical Efficiency Test (PET)
- Qualifying in nature (pass/fail – no marks added to final merit).
- Candidates qualifying in CBT will be shortlisted for PET at the rate of 3 times the community-wise vacancies (may increase/decrease based on Railway requirement).
- PET is mandatory for most candidates (exemptions apply – see below).
- Document Verification (DV) & Medical Examination (ME)
- Candidates who qualify in PET will be called for DV in the ratio of 1:1 (equal to notified vacancies).
- Shortlisting for DV is based on CBT merit + PET qualification.
- Final appointment is subject to successful DV (original certificates verification) and passing the prescribed medical standards.
Note: Calling more candidates than vacancies at any stage is allowed to account for dropouts/absences. Qualifying any stage does not guarantee final selection or empanelment.
